Birds Lose to Cougars
The first of two games ends in a loss

Well, T-Birds fans, if you were hoping for a big win against the Cougars this week, maybe it was just not in the cards. On Tuesday night, the birds suffered a loss at the CN Centre in Prince George, British Columbia. The Prince George Cougars won the game with a brutal score of 6-2. The Cougars had an exceptionally skillful night on the ice—but perhaps they were a bit lucky, too.

Prince George started the game off with a lead right away, scoring the first goal within five minutes of the puck drop. The goal was scored by Chase Witala and assisted by Joe Carvalho. The thing is, Logal Flodell adroitly blocked the puck; it should not have gone in the net at all. But the puck freakishly rebounded off a T-Bird and landed smack back in as if Flodell had not even made a move to stop it. Fans could be heard shouting their outrage over the unexpected goal and the disappointment only mounted from there.

The Birds did play valiantly, and they were able to tie the game up only eight minutes later when Mathew Barzal made his twelfth goal of the season. Barzal, however, also nabbed the puck under strange circumstances when it bounced off the end boards. It was Harry Potter Quidditch on the ice that night, folks—the puck seemed to have a mind of its own as it made its way around the arena.

Seattle did outshoot Prince George during the first period 11-17, but the Cougars not only outshot the Birds during the second period, but they also put another two points on the board during that same period. Kody McDonald made the first of these; the goal was assisted by Tate Olson and Bartek Bison. The second goal was scored by McDonald yet again on what had to be a stellar night for him, with Luke Harrison and Jansen Harkins making the assists.

Jansen Harkins was given a penalty shot in the third period, then McDonald scored a hat trick with assists made by Harrison and Sam Ruopp, giving the Cougars a wide lead. Flodell was taken out of the game and replaced by Landon Bow; Jerret Smith was able to put a goal on the board (with no assists) but by then it was just too late. Prince George made the last goal of the night, with Tate Olson scoring.

The Birds take the Cougars on again later this week.
