10-, 12-team AL Points League

We got Taro, me, and Justin for a draft this Saturday.

Anybody else want to square off?

Need an even number of teams to play, so Gmoney will need to signup. Bring it....

Actually I've never played a 10-team AL-only league...
Posted at MC's fantasy site... going to go check that...
Hey Justin - sudden thought.  How feasible is it for the three of us to get into a public league with the old AOL style points?  If we opened it to public, or sought one with similar rules, would that be do-able?

While it's been 6-7 years since I've been in a fantasy baseball league - if, in the end, you would need me to create an even-numbered league, I'd be willing to be included for a points league.  (tried - and ended up not liking - ROTO leagues).
I'd just need a heads up on the point breakdown - (I used to play at Sandbox back in the day).

H2H points leagues are not available in public leagues. Also, ownership in public leagues are randomly assigned by the system (so Taro, you, and I would not be able to join the same league). From my past experience, most public leagues only receive participation from about 25% of the owners.
I think our best bet is to create a custom league with the latest possible draft date and then do everything possible to recruit a reasonable number of owners.
IMO, the whole point of AL- or NL-only is to thin out the player pool, which is obviously lost when there's only 6-8 teams.

If you still got room, tell me where to be.

Btw, would anyone be willing to take my spot in Justin's 20-team points mixed-league?
Would be tough for me to manage both leagues this year and I really wouldn't want to autodraft.. Anyone willing to help out? You've got some really great competitition in Justin's league. :-)

Just talked with Doc about it, actually.  I'm gonna have to pass, though.  I already don't actually have time for the baseball posting I'm doing.  Fantasy baseball would make it worse.
I've successfully stayed out of fantasy baseball most years, which has been hard at times.  It's harder this year, but I need whatever relatively small investiture of time is required.  Day job, night job, family and relationships, plus travel, are suckin' me dry.  Whatever time I get for baseball I want to be watching it and talking about it rather than playing fantasy.
Hope the league rocks, y'all. Sorry I can't be a part.

Dr. D -
Is there a LeagueID for the AL-only league yet? Looks like we've got 4 owners from SSI, but zero response on the MarinersCentral thread. With only two days until our supposed draft day, actual registrations are worth a lot more than verbal commitments since people can sometimes be difficult to track down when you need them.
If we create the league and have everyone sign up, hopefully some randoms will get in so we can at least have a full league.

Anything's possible. ;)  My 2002 fantasy baseball experience may not be enough to survive in the shark-infested tank you're putting together.
But I'd still show if I could do it right.  I can take a butt-whipping like a man.  Taking a butt-whipping while being a no-show just wastes both our time.

Something else I've always wanted to do is a roundtable 'pick the sleepers' type prediction game. Similar to fantasy baseball, but no time required besides your initial picks.
Basically, each participant would pick 10 hitters and 10 pitchers who they feel are sleepers with the following ruleset (obviously amendable)....
(1) Players must have had 390 AB and 150 IP in 2010 in the majors (ROY criteria x 3)
(2) Points will be earned for the difference between 2010 and 2011 in OPS+ for hitters and ERA+ for pitchers.
(3) If the player has fewer than 390 AB / 150 IP in 2011, they get zero points.
(4) Multiple 'participants' can pick the same player.
(5) If we want, this could be limited to players on AL rosters on Opening Day.
Any interest?

If not, I'll do so tonite...
Suggest losing the -TB for pitchers you have in the mixed league... you have no idea how that wipes out pitcher value when you run it thru a BP forecast manager >:-]
If you don't mind, I'll give you some feedback as to how the points balance between hitters, SP's and RP's after running the points thru a sim calculator... the mixed league has some seriously whacked proportions...
Which was going to guarantee my walkaway :- ) but I can't in good conscience go through with the slaughter of the lambs...

15

I wasn't clear whether G agreed with you guys that he's in :- ) ... nor did I hear Matt's acceptance of the cigarette and blindfold...
Gracias Rick... lookin' forward to it man...

I kind of like Justin's system right now in the mixed league (SVs have too much value in most leagues).
Btw, Justin did you get my email?

Confused about rule 1 though - the player must have had 390 ABs or 150 IP...so they had to play most of a season and still be barely anything, and we're looking for the biggest jump between a mostly-full 2010 of blah and a mostly-full 2011 of awesome, right?  And I'd rather go plate appearances than ABs - no sense penalizing the walkers for not being free-swingers.
And no relievers by the 150 IP rule, starters and positionals only?
Glad we can overlap or with 10 and 10, looking for those last guys would be awkward.  It still will be when I luck out and pick some dude with a 130 OPS+ who then only gets 350 ABs or whatever.
Just let me know AL or MLB, and see who else wants to try to prognosticate. :)

I returned to stick for Sandy (a friend of mine from before I found the Ms' blogosphere)...that was the only reason I said anything at all here...I was trying to respect Jeff's request that I not comment here.  Of course I apparently have no will power...I couldn't stay away.
I will, however leave and never return if it's better for the group.  I have tried to keep my comments low-profile and unobtrusive, but perhaps it is too late to make that effort.
That said, you ought not count me as a member of this league as I have not even been invited and I assune G and Doc don't want to interact with me on that level.  Unless of course you're talking about a different Matt :\

Doc, I'm ready to hand you over the reigns once you join. You can feel free to adjust what you'd like.
My scoring system is based on wOBA (asides from TB for pitchers). I don't include stats like Ws, RBI because I think they overvalue players on good teams.
RP are valued lower than average (I don't like SVs), but feel free to change what you want.
Justin, punt me out of your league already@!

Only 4 if Doc joins...draft time is theoretically only 36 hours away...
I registered, though I will surely be very rusty...have not played since 2006

It's not that amigos don't want to do roto witcha.
It's that they want to be able to carry on a baseball conversation without being overwhelmed by a math whiz on quad-shot caffeine.  If yer'll just make it a point to disagree with people as little as possible, and to ration your posts to X per day, we're good.
It sounds funny but it's not that hard.  How often do I reply to a comment by saying "That's just wrong!" ?
You can talk baseball by finding things you agree with, rather than the inverse.
............
I'll handle the overwhelming around here ;- )  You just blend in the comments section and take your revenge in rotoball :- )

stating I have no idea what you're talking about, ghost.  If this posting style of yours is gonna stay this way, then I'll continue having no idea what you're talking about.
Except hopefully in a baseball sense.  Post and play away, as far as I'm concerned.
