Q.  Which 26-year-old prospects are worth watching and which are org filler?

A.  There's a whale of a big difference between a guy who (1) has been around a minor league so long that he starts beating the pitchers, and (2) a guy whose game evolves.  The first guy is no more likely to become an ML starter than he ever was.  But that second guy, the guy who changed fundamentally, that's different.

Wilson, as opined in a moment, is definitely presumed to be in category (2).

Q.  What is his swing like?

A.  Mikey has a legit football player's body, in combination with a baseball player's handspeed.  That's rare.  When's the last time you saw a Brian Bosworth, Mack Strong physique and the guy could grab a fly out of the air?  Mikey can.  Better than average baseball hand quickness.

Mike is real short to the ball, or his was in ST 2009.  He flowers out into a big extension, giving you the "preying mantis" explosion that Wing Chun practitioners would die for.

He's loose at the plate, moves his CG and "intentionality" to the ball, keeps the hands kinda low.  Reminds of the young Canseco, sort of, even more reminds of Sammy Sosa, in terms of the swing mechanics.

Of course, his pitch recognition and just simple talent is miles off what those guys' was, or he'd have been a star long ago.

Q.  What does the template tell you?

A.  Try as I might, I can only think of one guy who is anything like Wilson's template.  To comp Wilson out -- with a successful ML slugger, now, we would want this:

• Plus-plus natural power
• Exceptionally athletic in every sense, strength first (Bo Jackson type)
• Took a long time to develop

• Right-handed, of course
• Maybe a somewhat questionable strike zone coverage (simply can't reach the whole box in one AB)

• Terrrrrrrrible eye which suddenly took a big leap up, revolutionizing his profile

If you can think of anybody like that, let me know.  The only one I can think of, is this guy rat cheer.

Cecil hits all of the above, pretty much, except that instead of being Bo Jackson, Cecil of course was a nose-guard physique.

But he shared Mikey's problem of confusion in the batter's box.  What happened to him, was that he went to Japan and, while there, got V-E-R-Y comfortable waiting on slop.  Once he could handle fast and slow pitches, it was bombs away.  51 ML homers in his "rookie" year back from Japan.
