Probably half of the Denizens here are amateur photographers ;- ) but that doesn't mean we can't enjoy a few Nature images, snapped by a local Soccer Mom. Out of no mood other than sympathy, let me say. The worst possible place to be sucker-punched is, in the upper teeth, just under the nose, bending the nose up with everything else. One time a fight I know of consistent of one sucker punch, an uppercut to just that area. The victim was weeks recovering.

You're wayyyyy too familiar with Dr. D's liking of left hand pitchers with yo-yo changeups and life on their fastballs. In fact the only three LHP's recently who featured straight changeups with decent heat were Cole Hamels, Francisco Liriano and the young Johan Santana, which was why we liked the Danny Hultzen lotto ticket. A template doesn't always pan out, but it broadens the bandwidth of success.

In Spring Training this year, Fangraphs' Alex Chamberlain made Phelps one of his "Ten Fearless Predictions" or somesuch. The prediction: that Phelps would be a Top of Rotation (TOR) starter. Top 60 is what he said technically; if you shuffled 60 baseball cards and dealt them out to each team, they'd get two each, so, TOR. Phelps and Mike Montgomery were his two hunches for SP.

No excuses for Andrew Moore. He was never going to throw 100% quality starts. And if he doesn't actively impose a sense of confusion on hitters, he is subject to getting beaten soundly about the head and shoulders. As is Hisashi Iwakuma.
We talked last week about the fact that most pulled fly balls are off 'tasty' pitches. The first two homers off Moore were not tasty ... as such, in a vacuum. GOOD NEWS: the SSI amigos watching the game thought Felix threw the ball well. He is producing. In 10 starts this year, he's got 5 clear quality starts and 3 that just missed: 5 IP and 1 ER on Saturday with a 5:0 CTL ... 5 IP and 2 ER on Opening Day with a 6:0 CTL ... 6.1 IP and 4 ER against the Marlins. He is no longer giving us 8 IP and 1 ER but we are getting to the bullpen in good shape.

This "Player Handbook" entry by James would have been one of my favorites from his old Handbooks or Abstracts. It would have been a classic with regard to any player, but in this case it gives closure to a long chapter in Seattle Mariners history. Bill James Online still only $3 per month, a nominal fee in the literal sense.

James Shields rued the moment he left an 87 MPH cutter out over the plate against Robinson Cano on Friday. Here's a point we think is worth making very clear.
The interviews might leave you with the impression that pitchers only throw one or two "meatballs" per game. The actual percentage of pitches left middle-middle or middle-up is 22% of all major league pitches, not 2%. Don't let them tell you that pitchers can hit their spots to within 2-4 inches each time, and that walks are tremendous flukes. I'm not sure what brings me more joy than to know that young boys are out there having fun playing baseball. I prefer sandlot ball, without adult supervision, where boys learn to cooperate, take turns, and work out the rules of fairness. They learn to think: the rules of baseball are designed to make sense, in a spirit of cooperation. If you don't know the rules, you can usually figure them out, and get a consensus based on an internal logic. And if you have to adjust them, it's for the better.

PREAMBLE. The young TOR starter who debuted with a flash in 2013, that's K-Pax. He throws a raging fastball for strikes, pretty much, and has 0.5 of an offspeed pitch. Like a foshball that's off and on, or something. He's about the #14 pitcher in the league.
The lightning storm who throws 70% strikes, and whose fastball "plays up" due to a decently reliable offspeed game, that's Zeus.
Coming off the DL, Paxton has gained acceleration, though not at a perfectly linear pace, naturally. Graphs upward tend to have some zags in them. The graph hit "Zeus" on Friday.

Suburbs Guy pointed out that Andrew Moore is only the 3rd Mariner to post two 7 IP quality starts in his first two games. Moore is going to be consistently good, as opposed to terrifying. But there is a place in the game for the Rick Porcellos, Mike Leakes, J.A. Happs and .. Hisashi Iwakumas. Pitchers who will post 20 quality starts a year, even if they aren't in the top 10 Cy voting. Much MORE is there a place for Hisashi Iwakuma if he's making the league minimum...

Here is the mlb.com recap on the M's signing of two hot Latin prospects. The M's announced the contracts like the moment the signing period opened, so you do the math. Julio Rodriguez has been praised as having a "loose trigger" and a liking for 3-iron shots to all areas of the ballpark, as well as an "everyday right fielder" D-skillset. I'd be curious to know where G-Money would slot the 18-year-old among the M's current prospects.

Took a perfect game into the sixth ... with his Grade C stuff. On my scouting clipboard, at least. Starting about the 4th-5th it was his Grade B stuff.
He did not have the 97-99 fastball at his disposal. He was unable to hit both sides of the plate, putting the fear of Zeus (or at least of the training room!) into the batters. His offspeed stuff was moving but it was anybody's guess whether it would hit the zone, much less the low part of the zone. He had no fosh.

If you haven't noodled around at 'Savant, they've got lots of inneresting leaderboards based on StatCast. For example, you can find a player's "expected batting average" based on exit velocity and launch angle, which comes very verrrrry close to a real normalization.
There is "expected slugging average," xOPS+ (actually xWOBA) and lots of stuff.

Has been pitching cruddy. Think "Angels' version of He Who Must Not Be Named." He'll come at you -- only 2+ walks per game -- but you can come right back at him. 23 homers coughed up in 90 innings. We're guessing he usually suffers only one bad inning per start... make it count, boys.

In the 27th start of his career, opted for "Ah, who cares" mode. Many times you saw him stepping back into his rock, practically at the same time as Zunino put the sign down. His body language, his first-pitch strikes, and his 2-hit shutout all spoke for his extreme ATTACK mode.
