Loving my new living room

This summer has been the worst for my family in a long, long time. My family had not three but four deaths—my husband just learned of another on his side over the weekend. I had a miscarriage, as did two close friends. I’ve had several dental issues, a tire blowout, a sick kid more often than usual and plenty of other tiny pieces that have added up to make it a really difficult season. I’m SO ready for fall and for some major positivity.

"Solid Rain" could solve world's drought problems

Solid Rain is a new product which has been designed and tested in Mexico, where arid farmland is a huge problem for the population. It's a polymer that looks like salt, but absorbs water and turns into a gel. When mixed into the soil it absorbs up to 500 times its own weight in water, which can then be absorbed by plants over time. The Mexican government has done some pilot tests with amazing results.

The Elfego Baca Golf Shoot

For those that enjoy the game of golf, but really can’t stand the fact that it’s so safe and that the courses are all grassy and simply, there’s an event designed just for you.  The Elfego Baca Golf Shoot is one answer to the accusation that golf is a boring sport.  Taking place in Socorro, New Mexico, this event tests the ability of its competitors to deal with some rather harsh obstacles while negotiating their ball down a mountain.

Six Amazing and Unique Gardens of the World

Almost since the dawn of time, people have had a tendency to decorate the world around them to more please their aesthetic senses.  One of the most popular ways to do this is by using the natural world mixed with the innovations of man-made art.  Thus, gardens have been a popular way of expressing beauty (and usually vast wealth) for millennia.  Though many of the greatest gardens have been lost to time, existing now only in history books and legends, there are still many which have made it through the centuries.  I have gathered here six of these gardens, from the Far East to the Americas.  And though description can certainly not do these amazing locations justice, I have tried to include links to picture galleries where I could find them.  Enjoy.

Video Daily Double -- Draft Edition

Gordon says that Jonathan Mayo's mock draft at mlb.com tracks pretty closely with his thinking, and I agree.

I mean, not that it tracks with Gordon's thinking (which I can't verify), but that it tracks with what most of the "experts" seem to be concluding around this funny little World Wide Web of ours.

Meaning:  Mayo's top 10 are pretty much the 10 that are the "consensus" at the top.

Media Hijinks - Another Week of the Good and the Bad

This week in the industry, the buzz seems to be a bit lacking.  But even as I saw my feeds rapidly pile up with new behind-the-scenes photos from all the various films that are in production right now, some good stuff did manage to leak through the cracks.  Today, I present you with great news for Community fans, some sad news for Doctor Who fans, a bit of hilarity for those old enough to remember the Atari gaming system and an interesting development regarding the old classic Twilight Zone series.
