The strange face of Chinese diplomacy

Being that China seems to always be at odds with their neighbors, particularly when it comes to territory disputes, it is a strange thing when you hear about them trying their hands at creating peace in the world.  In their latest attempt to come across as good peace-keepers, the government of China has stepped into the middle of the Israel-Palestine conflict.  And though the end result may prove to be far less than one could hope, it does have the definitive effect of the country announcing itself as a player in the Middle East

Indian-Chinese border dispute resolved, but not finished

As I and most other major news sources in the world have already written about recently, there’s a bit of tension between the countries of India and China.  Several weeks back, Chinese soldiers marched into Indian territory, across the vague border between the two countries in the Ladakh region.  For a while they refused to leave, stating publically that they were in their own territory.  And though they currently have pulled back to their original position, this display of Chinese muscle may have more negative

Orwell's decaying birth house may be destroyed

In 1903 George Orwell was born Eric Blair, in a small two-room stone colonial bungalow in a town named Motihari, which was then an outpost in the Indian wilderness. Orwell's father was a British civil servant who worked as a deputy clerk in the burgeoning (and then legal) opium trade between British India and China. Their house was small and humble, even for a region where the jobs for locals were few and far between, involving cottage industries in mat-making and cooking oil production.

Chinese labor market booming

China is slowly but steadily growing its economy into the realm of real competition with the West.  They’ve got a massive worker base and the old, outdated industrial complexes are no longer being subsidized by the government in communist fashion, allowing room for growth and innovation.

But the changes to the economy are undermining these very strengths in a way that we in the West have experienced before.  Workers’ wages are climbing rapidly and factories are looking to move their operations where people’s time can be bought for less.

India and Pakistan: A new Cold War

There’s a new Cold War in the world today, and it’s not in North Korea as one might first think.  In fact, it’s between the age-old rivals of India and Pakistan.  Both are nuclear capable countries and their animosity runs deep, a seemingly endless conflict that has been going on for more than half a century.  Back and forth acts of violence perpetuate this cycle, born of a div

Heightened tension on the India-China border

Most countries near China seem to have problems with the massive country at one point or another, usually involving some sort of border issues. Both sea boundaries and land boundaries remain constantly disputed with no resolutions ever seeming to be reached.  This time around, India has been forced to deal with the issue, which has lead to a troop build-up on both sides of the questionable borderline in the Himalayan Ladakh region.

Seven amazing luxury spas

Vacations take many forms, from going on an epic adventure to just laying around the house and enjoying some time off.  Sometimes, however, one wants to get pampered and enjoy living like a king for a while. For these purpose, there are spa resorts. Naturally, the quality of spa resorts varies greatly. Most cities have local spas where one can go and get a massage or some other relaxing treatments for a reasonable price.

Yamgo: TV on the go

In today’s world, the boundaries between our televisions and our Internet are quickly blurring.  Not only can you tune into a web site to see the latest episodes of some of your favorite shows, but there are entire sites devoted to bringing television access directly to your computer and mobile devices.  Yamgo.com is one of these sites.  And while it may not be able to let you watch Game of Thrones, Doctor Who or Mad Men, it does provide a variety of options to keep you entertained.

Spiders ensnare and hunt bats: The stuff nightmares are made of

As if spiders weren't scary enough, I have just found out that some of them are large enough to ensnare and feed on bats. Folks, this is the stuff nightmares are made of – at least my nightmares. A scientific paper in PLOS ONE reports that more than 50 incidences of bat predation by spiders have been recorded on every continent except Antarctica. Sometimes the bats got tangled up in the webs and died of reasons like starvation and exhaustion.

Indian Ford advertisement stirs up ire

Now, for this week in idiot news - an advertisement for Ford in India is stirring up quite a controversy.  If you haven’t seen these things making their way through the normal media channels, there are three of them and each features people bound and gagged in the trunk of a Ford car while the driver smiles and looks back.  The biggest offender of the three ads shows Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi with three prostitutes in his trunk.  In a country where gang-rapes and women’s rights are taking center stage in politics, this isn't exactly the best m
