Spec's College Nickel Package -- Week 2

1. Lane Kiffin

Why did I always have the sneaking suspicion that Kiffin was another Mike Shula or David Shula or [sorry to bring up the name, Washington and UCLA fans] Rick Neuheisel.

As in: the "hot coach" who's more sizzle than steak.

Isn't USC supposed to roll out NFL bodies up and down the field?  Isn't Marqise Lee one of the top talents in the land?

54 yards passing?

Longest pass play: 8 yards?

Give credit to the Washington State defense, but ... wow ...

Spec's College Nickel Package -- Week 1

1. Football Championship Subdivision

It used to be called Division I-AA, but now that we're in a world in which everyone is above average, they had to call it something else.  And, since they don't play in bowls, I guess "championship" was available.  But what it really means is you get marching bands and rah-rah college-y stuff without all those big-time headaches and for half the cost.

In Week 1, it also meant ... cashing the guarantee check and stealing a victory:

Tsunami debris moving faster and bringing more invasive species than expected

Marine biologists initially estimated that it would take a long time for debris from the Japanese tsunami to make it to American shores. And that in that time, most of the potentially invasive species would have been scrubbed off the debris by the difficult ocean crossing. Unfortunately, this is turning out not to be the case.

Unusual Crafts: Taxidermy

Taxidermy is one of the few crafting skills that you can actually make a living with. Unlike virtually every other craft, people will actually pay decent money for taxidermy skills. And make no mistake, taxidermy is definitely a skilled craft with as much art to it as science. It's a lot more than just pulling the skin off an animal and sticking it on a form.

Oregon Zoo invites visually impaired kids in to pet anesthetized tiger

The Oregon Zoo recently invited visually impaired kids in to pet a tiger as she was anestetized for a routine medical procedure. This story is really heartwarming and sweet, unless (like me) you recently watched Red Dragon. In which case, it's hilarious.

Toddler buys a car with dad’s smartphone

Sorella Stoute of Portland Oregon is only one year old. But that didn’t keep her from accidentally buying a car on eBay Motors using her dad’s smartphone. Sorella’s parents didn’t realize what happened until they received the sales confirmation email from eBay.

Fortunately for Sorella’s family, the car was a beat-up 1962 Austin Healey Sprite with a price tag of only $202.50. Sorella’s dad joked that he is planning to keep the car, fix it up, and give it to her for her sixteenth birthday.

Seven Beautiful Lakes from Around the World

Lakes have long been places where human beings gathered to set up their homes and villages.  The presence of water and the food supply within makes it easy for people to live, at least on a smaller scale of population.  Times have changed over the centuries, however, and today lakes are often seen as places of recreation more than places of prime habitation.  Thus, the most beautiful lakes all seem to end up as tourist attractions, filled with luxury hotels and people from all over the world.  Today I present a list of seven lakes, some of them the popular tourist attractions that one might expect, but others remote and protected due to the place they occupy within national parks.  Whether you’re looking for a spot to get away from it all or a place to enjoy a watery vacation that doesn’t involve a crowded beach, there are lakes across the world for all tastes.
