Fake people meat: Tales of Hannibal's food stylist

I wasn't interested in watching Hannibal until I started reading Janice Poon's new blog called Feeding Hannibal. Poon is the lead food stylist and culinary expert on the production of Hannibal. After reading Poon's hilarious adventures and fascinating artistic fakes, I just queued up the available episodes to watch on Hulu tonight.

Three easy Mother's Day brunch classics

Whether it's breakfast in bed or at the table, brunch is a staple of Mother's Day celebrations. But there's no need to kill yourself trying to make complicated dishes. It's better to stick with these simple classics, as easy to prepare as they are delicious.

1. Bacon
Everyone loves bacon! Even vegetarians, which is why soy bacon is so popular.

Kitchen tips and tricks

A lot of homeschooling families skip the whole pretend play kitchen and food and let their kids cook along with them in the kitchen. My daughter was spreading butter with a butter knife at four, and I know other parents whose children do the same (with supervision, of course).

My daughter still has fake food to play with because she asked for it for Christmas (she uses it to feed her stuffed animals), but she cooks with me pretty regularly. Here are a few things that we have learned together so far.

Recipe of the Week: Chocolate éclair cake

It’s already hitting 80 degrees here in Missouri, and I’m not one for the heat. Fortunately I know a few good recipes for cool treats to keep my family happy. This éclair cake is actually something I make every December for my husband’s birthday, but it’s a really good summer dessert.

All you need is a packet of vanilla pudding, some graham crackers, a tub of Cool Whip and a container of chocolate icing. You’ll also need as much milk is directed on the package of pudding.

Three easy homemade salad dressing recipes

Ugh, salad dressing. OK, here is the deal: I don't like vegetables. About 95 percent of the time, I can only handle them in "salad" form. (Or hummus! Hummus counts as a vegetable, right?) Ever since going low-carb, I have been eating a lot of salads.

But guess what? A few weeks ago, I discovered that every single salad dressing in the grocery store contains sugar. Italian dressing, ranch dressing, Thousand Island dressing, Caesar dressing… sugar, sugar, sugar, sugar.

Slow message: Do the work now, reap the rewards later

Do you want to let that special someone know you care without having to do it every single day? Don't fret! Slow Message allows you to create messages now and define a 'loose' period of time that you want the recipient to receive your email. It can be sent in days, weeks, months or years, depending on what you choose. It sounds romantic to some. Unless it's someone that you know you're going to care about months down the road, though (a child, a parent), it smells like a recipe for disaster.

Why bother to travel?

It’s National Travel Week and that’s got me wondering: Why do we love to travel?

There’s as many reasons as there are travelers. It’s in our DNA from ancient ancestors walking across icy straits in search of what? Probably food and perhaps warmer weather. Today the same could be said as exotic recipes are a lure for foodies and who doesn’t love a warm, tropical vacation?
