Transcending borders around the globe

The time has come. You bought your ticket, you packed your bag and now your plan is about to touch ground on foreign lands you've only dreamed of. Though you've traveled before, this destination is a place you've never seen. You've dreamed of the landscape and the people for months, and you are excited to see if it meets your expectations.

Run Denver Run

Not only is running one of the best ways to explore a new city, but choosing a race in a new city is the perfect excuse to travel and compete in a new environment, demographic and state. Run Seattle Run traveled to Denver for the Colfax Half Marathon, part of the Kaiser Permanente Colfax Marathon series, which featured a weekend of races along Colfax Avenue, Downtown Denver and Colfax Avenue.

The Kid Should See This

One of my favorite blogs ever is The Kid Should See This. It consists of a bunch of videos found by a mom and her two young children. The cool thing is that they are not children’s videos, but interesting forays into art, science, food and other topics that both children and adults can enjoy together. Sometimes we spend an hour at a time just browsing through videos, especially if we haven’t seen any in a while. There’s always something amazing; some of Wood Sprite’s favorite bookmarks came from this blog.

Our German shepherd has quite the appetite, and feeding her healthy brands of dog food is costly. No matter which brand you use, you can save some money on pet food costs following these tips.

Kitchen tips and tricks

A lot of homeschooling families skip the whole pretend play kitchen and food and let their kids cook along with them in the kitchen. My daughter was spreading butter with a butter knife at four, and I know other parents whose children do the same (with supervision, of course).

My daughter still has fake food to play with because she asked for it for Christmas (she uses it to feed her stuffed animals), but she cooks with me pretty regularly. Here are a few things that we have learned together so far.

Orwell's decaying birth house may be destroyed

In 1903 George Orwell was born Eric Blair, in a small two-room stone colonial bungalow in a town named Motihari, which was then an outpost in the Indian wilderness. Orwell's father was a British civil servant who worked as a deputy clerk in the burgeoning (and then legal) opium trade between British India and China. Their house was small and humble, even for a region where the jobs for locals were few and far between, involving cottage industries in mat-making and cooking oil production.

How National Novel Writing Month can help you stay on task any month

In November of 2011 I decided to write my first novel. I had been writing and publishing poetry all my life, but I had no idea how to approach a novel. So I started Googling. One of the first things that I found was smack dab in the middle of National Novel Writing Month, affectionately, if somewhat cumbersomely, nicknamed "NaNoWriMo."
