Monday Medley: Saving dogs through photography

Pigtail Pals and Ballcap Buddies is passing around a story about a magician who calls little six-year-old girls “sexy” during his performance and pretty much belittles both boys and girls. Read the letter the mom wrote to him if you get the chance; I thought it was perfect, and a great example for anyone else who wants to speak out against something similar.

Thanks, O’Charleys!

It’s no secret that I keep a gratitude journal, and I offer my thanks to lots of people, places and even things (peppermint oil for keeping the brown recluses away, for starters!) every single day. I can’t tell you how much this changes your life; it can only be experienced. That said, I really like to offer public gratitude when businesses are doing things right, and this week I’d like to salute O’Charleys.

Missouri Botanical Garden

Measuring in at nearly 80 acres of natural and man-made beauty, the Missouri Botanical Garden is a great place to spend a quiet day out with that someone special.  Many different types of garden designs are present, from Japanese to English, as well as other things to see, such as statues, historic buildings, fountains and pools.  If you want to get out into nature for a while but don’t want to wander too far from the city, this is a great option.

McGurks Irish Pub

Positioned conveniently close to the downtown area, McGurks Irish Pub is a great place to check out, no matter what night of the week it is.  You’ll always find excellent Irish music playing there, the bands so well-known in many cases that McGurks has gained quite the reputation even beyond the Missouri borders.  The place is huge as well, so there’s plenty of room to wander about, sipping your beer while trying to meet new people.  Whether you’re looking for a drink, something to eat or to just have a good time, you should give McGurks

Ernesto’s Wine Bar

If you’re looking for a place where you can load up on good wine, good beer and an excellent selection of accompanying food dishes, check out Ernesto’s Wine Bar.  The staff here is dedicated to making sure your experience is pleasant and if you don’t happen to know as much about wine as you’d like, they can help you make the best decision on what to order.  Ernesto’s is a pretty popular place though, so expect it to be crowded during certain hours.  Still, for those that love wine and want to drink at one of the friendliest bars in town, this is

Keeping up with their interests

As unschooling parents, one of our biggest jobs is to keep up with our children’s interests, providing them as many resources and learning opportunities as possible for their passions. In some ways, this is more difficult than using a curriculum; instead of planning the year with one set of materials, things are constantly changing. Every day you wonder what you’re going to be learning about together.

Spec's College Nickel Package -- Week 7

October 19 -- Florida State at Clemson

The Seminoles are back in the heat of the conversation after a 63-0 thrashing of Maryland, which was their fifth straight impressive win behind redshirt freshman QB Jameis Winston.

Winston has put himself on the fringes of the Heisman discussion, a location already firmly held by Clemson QB Tajh Boyd.

Florida State has a bye week, so it's a lock to go into this game 5-0, while the Tigers must get past Boston College in order to carry a 6-0 mark into the contest.

Fun September crafts

Yesterday was in the 80s, but before that we had a couple of really fall-ish days of weather that are wrecking havoc on my allergies—and making my heart leap with anticipation at the same time. I just love the fall! I used to love the spring in Missouri, too, but lately our springs are so brief that there’s barely a season to enjoy before summer takes over.

Homeschooler discounts

In Missouri, homeschooling parents are often treated like teachers when it comes to getting discounts. (Visit this link for a ton of them!) In a lot of cases, you don’t even have to prove you are a homeschooler; just let the store know, and they are willing to give you a discount. Some stores even offer teacher newsletters that you can use to buy discounted materials, such as Scholastic. Try your local office stores, craft stores, book stores and teacher businesses for discount opportunities.
