Media Hijinks - The New, Original, Rebooted and Revisited

The first bit of news for this week revolves around the return of a man that was, for many of us, a childhood icon.  Paul Reubens, aka Pee-Wee Herman, has been working hard to get his character back into the limelight and now it seems as if he has been successful.  A new Pee-Wee movie is ready to go.  They have a script, a director and a pile of money to work with and expect to get filming started sometime next year.  Also, there appear to be some other rumors saying that there will also be a return of the Pee-Wee Herman television show starting next year, though I could find no details on when that might happen or how far along that project is.

King of the Hill nails Phoenix weather

Kudos to the Redditor who snagged this yesterday. I happened to watch the same episode last night, and I LOLd. The only inaccuracy here is that it's actually hotter than that in Phoenix right now. Temperatures Monday hit 119 degrees: so hot that flights in Las Vegas had to be grounded because the airplanes couldn't fly.

Where's the Arlen Heat Waver when you need him?

Research your way out!

If you have a story or a book you are blocked on writing, sometimes starting the research around secondary characters or for examples to support your main points will help get the dusty wheels turning in your head. Even if you have all the information you think you need, the act of researching can be a good way to step outside of the cirucular spiral prison of just thinking about how to write about that character or topic.

The first ever publishing hackathon

If you haven't noticed by now, I get energized by all the innovation, change, and growth going on in publishing. It's a phoenix-period for all of us who love and work with books. The old is transforming into something new. We don't know what it is yet. Some are scared, others are excited. Most of us are equal parts confused and hopeful.

What a great environment for something like Publishing Hackathon.

Six immersive events for geeks (and their families)

Many of us are proud to say that we’re geek to the core.  Video games, role-playing games, super hero movies, comic books and other unique interests have defined the way that we grew up and turned us into the people we are today. And while some may “grow up” and leave their geek behind, others of us hold onto our love until the day we bite the dust.

Series Review: X-Men

The X-Men comic books were one of the many geek staples of my childhood.  Though many cartoons came and went through the decades, it was a long time after I was a kid that any of them seemed even close to capturing the wonder I felt at the original printed stories.  As far as movies went, the idea of making an X-Men movie was never at the forefront of Hollywood’s “to-do” list.  Until the year 2000 that is, when Bryan Singer’s first attempt at bringing these iconic super heroes to life finally hit the big screen.

Vietnam’s Suoi Tien Cultural Theme Park

In the country of Vietnam, located within Ho Chi Minh City is one of the world’s more unusual amusement parks.  It is the Suoi Tien (or “fairy stream”) CulturalTheme Park and it’s not Disneyland by any stretch of the imagination.  This theme park’s design is based around the legends, folklore and history of Vietnam with a particular emphasis on Buddhism.

Rejuvenation of the Supersonic franchise?

Remember back in the day when cheering fans got to see Gary Payton and Shawn Kemp create the dynamic duo known as the “Sonic Boom?” Remember the days when George Karl wasn't the coach of the Nuggets? If you can answer "yes" to either of these questions, get excited because Seattle is on the fast track to bringing a franchise back to town.
