Beaufort, Australia’s Rainbow Serpent Festival

The Rainbow Serpent Festival is a celebration that takes places every January over the Australia Day weekend.  Held in Western Victoria, out in the open near the city of Beaufort, it’s an Australian musical event akin to Burning Man, albeit on a much smaller scale.  For four days, attendees can enjoy music, art, food and a spiritually inclined community.

Sometimes, a little bit of planning can go a long way while traveling. An early purchase of a flight, rental car, or hotel can save some cash, and having an itinerary can mean maximizing the fun. Having your days planned out, a compass (metaphorically) pointing north and a destination is something some people need. For many backpackers, and myself, the idea of making a plan beyond what you are doing in the now is absolutely ludicrous. Plans come and go, and normally, this is the result of finding great things to do along the way.

When they say football, they mean football

When meeting people from Europe, South America, or basically anywhere else in the world besides the States, talking about football normally means talking about what we call soccer. Sure many people are aware of this vocabulary conundrum, but when traveling to Australia, another rift in the definition of football comes about. While some Australians are soccer fans, as well as American football fans (which they refer to as gridiron), football for them means Australian Rules Football, (aka AFL or footy).
