It can be really hard to buy gifts for someone who is into something you have no idea about. When it comes to foodies and chefs, for example, I would not recommend trying to buy them a pan for Christmas. Most foodies have very staunchly held opinions about pans, and unless you have specific instructions, buying them a pan is a sure ticket to a returned or regifted item.
Have you started your holiday baking yet? If not, here is a sweet sugar cookie recipe that you can use for making cute, ornament-shaped cookies. (Or you can just buy a loaf of sugar cookie dough and bake it!)
A recent report released by the Annals of Emergency Medicine reveals the source of a 2011 botulism outbreak in a Utah prison: the prison's self-styled hootch master was feeling creative, and tossed a baked potato into the mix. The resulting batch of prison wine sickened eight inmates.
Eggnog practically doesn't count as a holiday treat anymore, with "Christmas creep" being what it is. I spotted my first eggnog this year on store shelves the week before Halloween, for pity's sake.
That being said, eggnog is still considered one of the classic Christmas indulgences. Rich, thick, creamy, and possibly containing raw eggs. It sounds weird, and it is. A lot of people don't get the deal with eggnog, which I understand. I am kind of on the fence about it, personally.
Every year we go through this: is that a yam, or a sweet potato? None of us can remember, and the grocery stores are hardly helpful. I have seen the same grocery store label the same thing either "yam" or "sweet potato," seemingly according to the whims of whoever last stocked the produce department.
I don't know about your family, but every year the "yams vs sweet potatoes" debate is second only to discussions of "second cousin vs cousin twice removed." No one can remember the rules for either, but both sides end up discussing it endlessly.
Have you heard about the parents who did not send a grain item with their child to lunch at school and were fined $10 for providing said child with—get this—Ritz Crackers? I’m sure her nutritional content would have been deficient that day without that item! What if the poor kid had a grain allergy, or she had already had grains for breakfast and would for dinner, too?
The Activity Mom has some fun superhero workouts going on, as well as ideas for your Christmas countdown. Do you have your advent ready for the holidays yet? We have our house decorated and the advent box out, but I haven’t put anything inside it yet. This year we are using simple chocolates, and I am inserting a pair of holiday socks in the final box.
November, December, and January are a great time of year to buy citrus fruits. With a fresh crop from Florida and equatorial countries, the produce aisle is filled with lots of fruit to replenish your winter stores of vitamin C. No wonder these delicious beauties are a traditional Christmas gift and stocking stuffer in many countries!

This variety of navel orange has dark pink or red flesh. Aside from the color, they are identical to regular navel oranges.
There are a whole host of seasonal crafts that only really get trotted out at Christmas. I think most of us have done one of these at some point or another.
Cranberry Garlands: F
Cranberry garlands look so pretty when Martha Stewart does them. Have you ever tried to make one? The cranberries are hard, so you have to stab them with the needle, which is both tiring to the hands and likely to stab yourself. Juice gets everywhere. Half the berries just fall off. It's a huge, dripping mess.
