POTD Randy Wolf

.

Come Up to the Lab, Let's See What's On the Slab

Ron Shandler offers his own CAT scan on this pitcher, courtesy the 2012 Forecaster, back when Wolf was healthy:*

  • Consistently has better actual ERA's than component stats (meaning, he's saavy but un-talented - jeff)
  • Low DIS (disaster) rates (meaning, his main skill is "damage control" - jeff)
  • Is an "innings eater" in "above-average SP clothing"
  • Avoid.  Crash coming (this occurred - jeff)

.

The Arsenal

Wolf was always a rare bird.  He's an 89-MPH lefty who throws everything including the kitchen sink, even making stuff up on the mound.  Check out this hilarious 49-MPH pitch he threw to Brandon Phillips.

He legitimately throws 4 pitches without prejudice, very unusual in a left hand pitcher.  You get your Shawn Marcums doing it from the right side.

He does NOT throw 4 pitches because he's got 4 good ones.  All four pitches are pretty lousy - but he does, in fact, use them with a lot of intelligence.  Check this video for confirmation.

Corey Hart Leaps Onto Zduriencik's Bandwagon

.

Q.  Does SSI agree that Corey Hart, Michael Morse, Nelson Cruz are very similar players?

A.  SSI does agree with that, yes.  Along with Jayson Werth, Josh Willingham, and the like.  Defining characteristics:

  • Right handed
  • Huge bodies
  • Aggressive on the first pitch (Richie Sexson, Jay Buhner, Cecil Fielder don't qualify)
  • .275/.325/.500 type profiles
  • 0.40 type eye ratios
  • Good plate coverage, professional approach (they ain't Steve Balboni; they can drive a pitch to right-center)
  • Not supremely talented (Albert Belle, Danny Tartabull, Jose Bautista don't qualify) ...
  • ... But these guys can RAKE

.

Q.  Are they of comparable value to Kendrys Morales?

A.  Very comparable value, but "right-shifted" down the EMP spectrum to what the Mariners need.  These players don't manage the plate as well, but they hit LHP's, and they have MUCH more power than Kendrys -- typically a 150+ Power Index (PX) vs. Kendrys' 120.

Bryant’s Cocktail Lounge, Milwaukee

Those travelling to or through the big city of Milwaukee might consider taking a night out to go visit Bryant’s Cocktail Lounge.  This bar has been around for 75 years now, a true testament to the fact that they’re doing something right.  Their focus is on cocktails and the bartenders are highly skilled at mixing both the exotic as well as the traditional.  The atmosphere here is classy yet unique in its own way, a perfect place to relax and enjoy a few drinks.  Whether bringing along a date or going alone, Bryant’s is a

Endorsements in Seattle

.

Once again:  we'll all believe it when we see it.  :- )

Twice again:  it's Hot Stove League.  What did you want to talk about, the Seahawks?  ::pfft::

......

An interesting issue comes up:  would you ever see a high-profile Team LeBron scenario sign with the Mariners, even if the Mariners were the only team offering a trophy contract?  Or would the endorsement situation -- not the winning situation, but the endorsement situation -- preclude that?

I don't know the answer.  Here are a few thoughts that come to mind.  Hopefully you've got better than this :- )

My own instincts run to two basic ideas:  (1) there is no city in the world like New York.  (2) You can definitely do business in Seattle, my friend.

.

Ken Griffey Jr.

Junior, playing in Seattle and Cincinnati, had deals with

  • Nike
  • NINTENDO (ahem)
  • Wheaties
  • Pizza Hut
  • Pepsi
  • Dick's Sporting Goods
  • Upper Deck
  • a bunch of others

Griffey is Griffey, but ... I wouldn't mind being on the cover of a major video game.  The Nike and Nintendo deals come with TV commercials, and you can launch from there.

Wisconsin will start salting its roads with cheese waste

This winter, Wisconsin is going to be salting its roads with cheese brine, the salty water leftover from the cheesemaking process. Milwaukee will be the first major city to try using cheese brine to de-ice its roads, and if it works well, this pilot program will be expanding. I love to see people putting waste to good use, instead of just dumping it!

Scherzer or Price for Seager

Steve Adams at MLB Trade Rumors was pretty impressive on Tuesday.  Seems that he has systematically memorized the needs of all 30 teams, as well as the situations of the top 50-100 free agents.  Guy must do it for a living.

This snippet was interesting:

Potential haul for Max Scherzer (you pick the team)

Steve Adams:

Couple of top 100 prospects and a supplemental prospect/low-level but high upside wild card guy... otherwise maybe a good, young MLB player with some team control plus a decent prospect.

Locally, we're used to hearing something more along the lines "Taijuan, KPax, Zunino, Miller and Iwakuma might open discussions," so Adams obviously has paid some attention to actual market prices paid over the past ten years.

I also like his feel for the fact that a proven MLB youngster, say Kyle Seager, is worth far more than a hyped top-100 prospect.  (On the interwebs, an unbeaten-untied-and-unscored-on Wil Myers is worth several Kyle Seagers.)

Quick Links - D.J. Peterson

.

I/O:  Gordon, in June, compared him to Edgar Martinez.  With caveats.  Opined that D.J. "should" settle in as a Butler / Youkilis level producer in the big leagues.

Crunch:  Far be it from Dr. D to kibitz Gordon on a pre-majors ballplayer.  Might as well kibitz Yasser Seirawan on a Bishop-vs-Knight ending.

.

I/O:  Baseballheatmaps, in March, said that D.J. was "by far" the best college player they had seen.  They agreed with Gordon as to his Edgar-like hitting style.

Crunch:  It'll take you 60 seconds to scan the article, if you haven't seen it yet.  Three big images and a coupla bullet lists.  Knock yerself out.

.

I/O:  Spectator, in his Rickroll on corner infielders, gingerly advises us to prepare for a D.J. Peterson who actually plays third base in Safeco, meaning a trade of Franklin, Ackley, or both.  Jim opines that Longoria / Zimmerman production "isn't out of the question."

Crunch:  Jack Zduriencik is a big believer in giving a young player a chance to improve his infielder's glove.  Rickie Weeks had a -12 runs and -9 runs UZR his first two years at Milwaukee, then went to even-steven in year three, and above average thereafter.  You know about Ackley.

If, in 2012, we had quite realized what the M's plans were for Mike Zunino, it would have overthrown all of our conversations about Montero, Jaso, and everybody else.  So if the M's see Peterson as The Third Base Zunino, well....

Kyle Seager, by the way, wouldn't inherently gain any WAR from moving from 3B to 2B.  Their positional adjustment is the same.  His footspeed doesn't look real second-basey to me; I'm just sayin'.  (His numbers were spectacular there in 2011-12, in about 15 games.)

.

I/O:  Jonathan Mayo, at MLB.com, reveals that D.J. was "plan B" for several teams drafting in the top 10, that the M's felt that he tumbled to them at the 12, and that he'll probably be in their next Top 100 list.  (Sickels has Peterson on his "honorable mention" for the top 75, of which there are about 30-40 honorable mentions.)
