From The New York Times to The Atlantic to The Magazine

I read a lot. I'm the guy who is glued to his phone standing in line, sitting on the bus and sometimes even walking down the street. But I'm not on there doing the text messaging or fumbling with my iTunes. I'm probably reading the rest of a news article or a story that I didn't finish while waiting in line, walking down a different street, etc.

Jets shake up the quarterback position

The 2012-13 season was definitely a forgettable one for the New York Jets. Rex Ryan prefaced the season with a lot of dumb words, Mark Sanchez played himself redundant and the Tim Tebow-project absolutely failed. The Jets really have no positives to look back on during their long off-season break. The only thing they have to look forward to is hoping that next season doesn't end with a mediocre record and no trip to the post season. How are the Jets going about turning the ship around? Their answer may lie with 35-year-old veteran quarterback David Garrard.

Buying your way onto the NYT bestseller list

It's an open secret in the publishing industry that it's not too difficult to game the New York Times bestseller numbers, at least for one or two weeks at a time. The "NYT Bestselling Author" is not just a prestigious badge of honor, it can also be a self-fulfilling prophecy. All you have to do is crack the list once, and you can use that title forever. This can generate untold revenue in the form of future book sales, contracts and consulting gigs.

Heavy hitters in the distance world invade Armory 5K

With regular sports like baseball, basketball and football, schedules are released prior to the upcoming season. Anxious fans see their post-season blues mollified for one day when their favorite team’s schedule is announced. While the awareness of the schedule does have its plus sides, there is some merit to a bit of excitement and surprise. This is one aspect that keeps being a fan of distance running fun.

Knicks pick up a veteran big man

While the New York Knicks are known for having three All-Star caliber players that struggle to find a rhythm, they are still the second best team in the east. With Tyson Chandler and Melo truly finding a good pace of play together, and Amare Stoudamire happily falling into the sixth man role (sometimes), the team has put up some great numbers, starting out as one of the hottest teams in the league.

So you’re so cool, that you’re uncool, but that’s cool, because being uncool is cool?

Well we have all heard the word hipster, but it wasn't until the not so distant past that we realized hipsters are real, a plague, and spreading. When we first heard about them, they seemed to be quarantined to a small suburb in New York, but now you can see them nearly everywhere. They've escaped captivity and they are coming to completely under appreciate and taint a city or state near you!

Mediocre sequels

Jack Finney's novel Time And Again is a marvelous read with a unique plot told in an engaging first-person narrative. Simon Morely, an artist working in advertising in New York City, meets a U.S. Army officer named Ruben Prien. Prien tells Morely all about a unique project he is working on related to time travel, one done via hypnosis. Intrigued, Morely thinks it over and decides to take part.

Halfway there

With the All-Star break having just passed, it’s safe to say we've made it halfway through the 2012/2013 NBA season. It has been a nice change to last season’s lockout shortened year, with the drama and excitement being at an all-time high. While we still have a long way to go, and playoff excitement doesn't start for another few months, this season has been far from a let down. So what can be said about what has happened and what the future holds?

Cheating on your "locally grown" diet

I read this recent New York Times article with a mixture of chagrin and relief. At least I'm not the only one who's cheating on their "locally grown" diet this time of year. It turns out that a lot of restaurants and small bistros which specialize in locally grown food also have to cheat as their winter stores grow thin. (Or, as is the case with one particularly hard-core restaurant in Washington, just close up shop for December and January.)
