Spec's College Nickel Package -- Week 2

1. Lane Kiffin

Why did I always have the sneaking suspicion that Kiffin was another Mike Shula or David Shula or [sorry to bring up the name, Washington and UCLA fans] Rick Neuheisel.

As in: the "hot coach" who's more sizzle than steak.

Isn't USC supposed to roll out NFL bodies up and down the field?  Isn't Marqise Lee one of the top talents in the land?

54 yards passing?

Longest pass play: 8 yards?

Give credit to the Washington State defense, but ... wow ...

Source of cyclospora infection traced

Authorities have traced a recent outbreak of cyclospora food poisoning in Iowa and Nebraska to bagged salad mix. They are refusing to name the brand, because apparently all of the affected salad greens have already moved through store shelves by now, so all it would do is paint the salad mix manufacturers in a bad light. But I guess keep an eye on those salads if you live in the midwest?

The growing presence of independent authors in the publishing industry

We all hear stories about the breakout success that a few authors have. And there is plenty written, including by me on this blog, about how this kind of independent or self-publihsed success is challenging the traditional publishing model. But for the most part, a success story is about a single author- I usually picture as someone from a suburb in Nebraska going from PTA meetings one day into a NY city star in the VIP section overnight, even though I know it's not even remotely like that.

Does publishing need some branding strategy?

What's branding again?

I hear that question a lot. Branding is one of those terms that we all throw around as if everyone knows what it means, but when I talk to people at the social media conferences I go to, everyone has a different definition when it gets down to specifics. And don't get me started on the various theories that everyone is certain of around how to do branding right. There are as many theories about what makes "good" branding as there are good brands.

Keystone Oil Pipeline approved!

The energy situation in this country is a challenge, right? Oil and gas prices are going up even as reserves are going down. We're trying tracking, but it's not going well for the environment. The promise of greener technologies like wind and solar has been slow in getting support/funding, and therefore slow in growing as something that is filling that energy void.
