I'm starting to wonder if Z is just in on every FA to drive the price up and come in later to steal the leftovers.

I think there are a few reasons Z and the M's are rumored on every FA out there.

1.  Z is leaving no stone unturned in trying to boost the talent level in the system.  He's looking at every option to see what it will cost him, and then evaluating the cost/benefit.

2.  Agents know the M's have cash, so they're leaking the M's involvement to drive up the price of their clients

3.  Being linked to everyone creates a smokescreen about what you're really trying to accomplish

4.  Being linked to FO'a your competitors covet might drive them to do something rash that will hamper their ballclub (Taro's argument above)

Luke Scott, arb eligible but not a fit with the Os, is apparently now also being considered as a Branyan-alternative, along with LaRoche.

I have to say, he looks like a cost-effective 25 doubles, 20 dingers, 50 walks.  Supposedly he's willing to play 1B (had a 10-game trial there in 09) or continue in LF, which would offer a better flex-spot roster construction than Branyan or LaRoche.

I "get" stars & scrubs, but Z could be putting together an interesting fleet of patient, versatile Civics.  A Scott-Cammy-Saunders-Tui[-eventually Ackley] roster could come at you from a lot of different angles.  If the only S&S alternative is to overpay Bay in money and years, I'm not sure if patient, decent-slugging, defensively versatile Civics is not the better temporary course.

Lee to M's AND Lackey for big coin (5/85?) to the BoSox.

Also, Rosenthal reports (old news?) that Jason Bay rejected BoSox final offer of 4/60.  The Mets seem like the only other source of competition for Bay.  A good day :)

Freaking unbelievable.

Cliff Lee is an amazing pitcher and an unbelievable fit for this park and D. WOW.

Lessson learned. NEVER question Z. Passing on Ed. Jackson and Harden looks GENIUS right now.

He's the troubled control pitching profile that found his grove and starting dominating. He also pitched well in philly despite being in a hitter's ballpark. He'll pitch very well in seattle.

Cliff Lee is going to be unbelievable in Seattle. Wow, I'm just waiting for this to become official.

Looks great to me - especially since it doesn't sound like we lost much in the way of prospects.   Still waiting for a bat though!

You don't trade for an ace like Lee on a one-year contract if you plan on playing small-ball and hoping for 85 wins again. :)  Yes...the bats are soon to follow.

IN Z I TRUST!!!!
