From'05-'08 Bedard has averaged $14.2mil of value. Considering the injury risk and that the market today is lower than in any of those years, I wouldn't pay him any more than that.

$13-14mil over 4-5 years should do it. $14mil over 7 years was the agents opening offer, I don't why we'd offer so much more than that.

We would be lucky to get Bedard for 14-15 million, the less years, the more he and his agent will ask for per year. Bedard is a 20 million dollar talent. You know this, I know this, and I guarantee his agent knows this. If you are going 3 years, even in this down economy, I expect that it will cost us 16 or 17 per year.

Can't blame Bedard for not pushing too hard. If I had a golden arm I wouldn't want to loose it either. Especially before I had a chance to really cash in. The wickedest curve east & west of the Mississippi.

With his latest injury forcing Bedard to the DL, his trade value just went splat.  There's never been a better moment to saddle up to the negotiation table and generously offer Bedard a long term contract that is worth way less than he'd get in free agency.  Offer him 4/52 and he'll jump on it...I guarantee it.

Bedard has to know that there is going to be a risk premium on his next contract. Poor guy seems like a 29 year old pitcher in a 39 year old pitcher's body. I like him but I'm not sure I would aggressively pursue Bedard in the off season. If he's willing to sign a discounted short term deal, then yeah but he's Unreliable with a capital U. It would be great to have him on the mound in the playoffs but the problem is going to be getting him there in one piece. I like upside scenerios as much as anyone but he looks to be on the Chris Snelling injury circuit.

Am sure Bedard, and everybody else, knows that he isn't going to be able to command the same contract as a CC Sabathia can.  Durability is a factor.

But many M's fans seem to believe that the "risk premium" discounts Bedard from a $12M value to an $8M value.

Argument here is that the "risk premium" discounts Bedard from $23M to $15-17M.
