This is why I can't understand quitting on the season. A healthy Guti adds a TON of value to the roster. The kids doing what we think the kids can do makes us a threat in this or any division.
Where's Matt with his projections to say we're a 94 win team? With THIS club I'd believe that upside. We could be freakish. Dustin Ackley was a 5 WAR player over a full season. Healthy Guti could top that. If they're ready? Look out.
Or yeah, maybe the soup isn't done simmering yet and we can't serve it in 2012.
But I'll want to see some evidence of that before I ratchet back on my enthusiasm.
Indeed, G. Again, if this were a team full of Vidros and Batistas, that would be one thing.
But Zduriencik has LEGITIMATE upside everywhere, and these aren't raw rookies at 1B, LF, 2B, C/DH etc. They are players who could definitely return the sleeper $20 roto value, this year. The 2012 Seattle Mariners will have six, eight players of that potential-$20 type.
Sleepers who could, very feasibly, return $20 on a $5-10 roto investment:
- Carp LF
- Smoak 1B
- Montero C/DH (won't actually sell for $5-10 in roto)
- Ackley (see #3)
- Gutierrez CF ($20 in 2009, $16 in 2010)
- Ichiro RF
- Iwakuma $15
- Noesi $15 (cast by Shandler as sleeper, probably better than Ivan Nova)
- Paxton $15-20 and/or
- Hultzen $15-20 (Jay-Z again this week reiterating that Paxton and Hultzen could come north out of ST)
We're not counting Seager, Liddi, Casper Wells, etc, although Ron Shandler, for instance, actually does have Casper Wells as a potential 20-20 sleeper. We're not hallucinating here. Kyle Seager looks promising, but we're not spending time worrying about whether he's a $15-20 roto sleeper for this year. That would be a bit of a stretch.
Justin Smoak as 2012 step-up player is not a reach. He'll be on a lot of post-hype sleeper lists. The 10 players listed are ALL major roto sleepers for 2012. You'd love to have ANY of those guys tucked away if you could get them for bargain prices.
Franklin Gutierrez, for example, was worth $20 and $16 in roto in 2009-10, and bear in mind that's his bat only - and relative to other LF/RF players. 5x5 roto doesn't have the CF position.

Granted, it's possible that only 3 of the above sleepers to pan out. Or none. Very good, Egbert, sit back down. ;- ) But it's also possible to get 8 of them to pan out, and I'll cheerfully hold my breath hoping for it, this March and April.
Enjoy,
Jeff
